Tech people. Fundraising people. Grocery store salespeople. Listen up.
Whatever you work with, whatever you sell, whatever you promote, whatever you make – it’s not about the thing, it’s about the people.
Dimitri was setting up one of our dozens and dozens of online meetings the other day – this one, adding new people to a group that has been meeting for a while. Dimitri is a tech person by nature, a geek and proud of it. But after years of focusing first and foremost on getting the tech right, he has turned that priority on its head. And so, 2 days before the meeting, he was on the phone with yet another newcomer, walking her calmly through the steps of joining the meeting, and making her feel as if she had just discovered a whole new world.
It’s not about the tech; it’s about the people.
In honor of my mom’s memorial, we have asked people to donate to one of her favorite causes. In our attempts to acknowledge the people who have donated, we have uncovered mistake after mistake on behalf of the organization’s fundraising staff. Their response has been to explain to us the many ways our attempts to give them a whole bunch of money are not conforming to their systems.
It’s not about the money; it’s about the people.
Our world has become so focused on the stuff, we have forgotten that it is people who make this world go round. Yeah, there’s technology, but someone needs to push the right buttons in the right order, or that technology is worthless. Yeah, there’s money, but what good is money without people?
Relationships. What matters more than anything, at the end of the day, at the end of our lives, is how we have been with other people.
In the day-to-day of our busy lives, if we can just take a breath and remember that, we will find way more reasons to smile.
Because it’s never about the stuff. It’s about the people.
