Thanks Hildy, great way to start the week. And thanks to Bonnie for the background info on Susan. Working with people with intellectual disabilities, I often see the judging and the assumptions made about their abilities and supposed limitations. All people have dreams and expectations. The key focus is not how do we change ("fix") folks with disabilities, but how do we change ("fix") society. Obviously, Susan Boyle did not need any fixing...but the audience sure did.

Naava, Bonnie and Kris:
Thanks for your notes. Yes, this video is taking off like wildfire! It hit the tubes this weekend, and this morning I have seen it on 3 other blogs aside from mine. The story is just so touching, and her voice is so beautiful. How many times will I watch this before it gets old? (I do know for proven fact that the answer will be more than 6... :-) )

Hildy,
We were similarly moved when we watched this video and coincidentally wrote a similar post on our blog this a.m. (we didn't know you had written yours). The comment from Bonnie does make this story that much sweeter. I'm definitely rooting for Susan. Her story is not unlike the story of Britain's 2007 winner Paul Potts-- overcoming much to the delight of many. And that's what our friends who serve non-profits do.
Cheers!

Hildy -

Thanks for sharing this. I became curious about Susan Boyle after watching this and did a bit more searching online. Here's some background she provided a UK paper. Makes her story even more inspiring:

"I was born with a disability and that made me a target for bullies. I was called names because of my fuzzy hair and because I struggled in class. I told the teachers, but because it was more verbal than physical I could never prove anything. But words often hurt more than cuts and bruises and the scars are still there. I still see the kids I went to school with because we all live in the same area. They're all grown up with children of their own. But look at me now - I've got the last laugh...Mum loved the show and used to tell me I should put my name down and that I'd win it if I did. But I never thought I was good enough. It was only after she died that I plucked up the courage to enter. It was a very dark time and I suffered depression and anxiety. But out of the darkness came light. I realised I wanted to make her proud of me and the only way to do that was to take the risk and enter the show."
