Hildy,

I not only agree with you, but apply the concepts in the actions of the Tutor/Mentor Connection, which is based in Chicago.

I started building a database of Chicago volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs in 1976, and have been inviting programs to connect, network, share ideas, and work together in activities that make sense and serve the self interests of each participant.

In 1993 this formalized into the Tutor/Mentor Connection. One of the tools we use to support this type of working together is an on-line library with links to more than 200 youth serving organizations in Chicago, and more than 1500 links to others who have information that these programs, and donors, and volunteers, can use to help kids connect with mentors, and stay connected till the kids finish school and are starting jobs.

A key piece of this information is the use of maps, which show where poverty is concentrated in all of Chicago, and point to tutor/mentor programs in different zip codes. These maps also show assets, such as businesses, churches, hospitals, universities, etc. who have locations in different parts of the city, and thus could share the responsibility for helping kids to careers in the neighborhoods where they have locations.

You can read the articles on my blog to find links to all of this information. I hope your advocacy and consulting leads to more people who use these concepts to expand the resources available to help all of us do needed work.
